So “90s Gold” is the latest effort for Femcee Honey Cocaine. As soon as the tweet for this popped up in my twitter timeline, I immediately felt my spider sense tingle. I was thinking (90s Gold? This chick betta bring it!)
Back in ‘05 when I was in college, I was fascinated with 80s era music/style (I still am really) and at one point the music industry went crazy on the 80s gimmick trend. I was soo hurt. They took my classics and ruined them! So when I came across this Honey Cocaine mixtape, I was a little nervous. So I thought I’d give it a chance.
But 90s gold tho? After looking at the tracks I realized that some of the tracks weren’t even made in the 90s! (Cuz Rock the Boat came out my freshman year in high school and that clearly was 2001! I’m tellin my age here lol) And No Scrubs was released in ‘99. The sound of that record (although released in the 90’s) is not a classic 90’s joint. Embarrassing? Yeah I would think so.
So needless to say, right off jump I was already annoyed. But hey…I thought maybe I should give her a second chance.
After listening to the tracks I began to wonder. Why would Rap-Up Magazine hype this? It’s not even mediocre at best and it’s a bad rendition of the 90s. :( Could this be the onslaught of a 90s gimmick? Is the 90s the new 80s? Will there be more massacres to my beloved “90s” classics? I digress…
Here is the Mixtape. Listen for yourselves.
Hopefully Honey puts out something in the future that lives up to the hype.
